Moodro is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our R&D team and turn ideas and prototypes into robust, well-engineered mechanical solutions ready for field testing and volume production. This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who wants to own mechanical design from first concept through prototype, test, and production. You will design enclosures, mounts, and mechanical assemblies for advanced electronic and RF systems that must perform reliably in demanding real-world operating environments, and you will see your designs tested and used in the field. The ideal candidate is not someone who simply produces CAD models and drawings. They are someone who takes ownership of the mechanical product, understands the environment it must survive, thinks about manufacturability from day one, and uses test results and field feedback to make the design better with every iteration. The majority of the role will be focused on mechanical design, analysis, and engineering documentation, with regular hands-on time building and testing prototypes, and working with suppliers and manufacturing partners. Position Summary The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design, documentation, and production readiness of Moodro’s products and systems. This individual will: • Design enclosures, mounts, mechanical assemblies, and electronics integration components for rugged, field-deployed systems. • Engineer designs for thermal management, ventilation, sealing, and protection against dust, moisture, shock, and vibration. • Create complete, high-quality engineering documentation, including 3D models, drawings, specifications, and BOMs. • Own mechanical designs from initial concept through prototyping, testing, and release to production. • Incorporate test results, field feedback, and manufacturing input into continuous design improvements. • Apply DFM/DFA principles to prepare designs for reliable, cost-effective volume production. • Work closely with hardware, embedded, RF, and manufacturing teams to deliver fully integrated products. • Take ownership of mechanical design quality and ensure design changes do not compromise product performance. The role works closely with the hardware, embedded, and RF engineering teams, who own the electronic and software aspects of the product. The Mechanical Design Engineer owns the mechanical design, documentation, and production readiness of the product. Key Responsibilities Mechanical Design & Engineering • Design enclosures, housings, brackets, mounts, and mechanical assemblies for electronic, RF, and integrated systems. • Design for integration of PCBs, antennas, cabling, connectors, power systems, and other electronic components. • Develop cooling and ventilation solutions to manage heat in sealed and high-power electronic systems. • Design for ingress protection (dust and water), sealing, and environmental durability. • Engineer structures and assemblies to withstand shock, vibration, transport, and rough handling in the field. • Select appropriate materials, fasteners, finishes, and manufacturing processes for each application. • Define tolerances and fits to ensure reliable assembly and consistent performance. • Ensure designs remain reliable, serviceable, and easy to operate in demanding field environments. Engineering Documentation • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and assemblies in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or comparable tools. • Produce detailed part and assembly drawings with appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing. • Develop specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and flat patterns for sheet metal parts. • Prepare assembly documentation and instructions to support prototype builds and production. • Maintain revision control and ensure documentation accurately reflects the current design. • Review drawings and documentation for quality, accuracy, and completeness before release. Prototype to Production • Own mechanical designs from the first model through prototype fabrication, assembly, and testing. • Build, assemble, and evaluate prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal, and laser cutting. • Support environmental, durability, and field testing of prototypes and new product releases. • Analyze test results and field feedback, identify root causes of mechanical issues, and implement design changes. • Apply DFM/DFA principles to reduce cost, simplify assembly, and improve manufacturing yield. • Release documentation to production and support the transition from prototype to volume manufacturing. • Manage engineering changes so that updates do not compromise product performance or reliability. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Supplier Management • Work closely with R&D, hardware, embedded, RF, and manufacturing teams to deliver integrated products. • Balance mechanical, thermal, RF, and electrical requirements in collaboration with other engineering disciplines. • Work with contract manufacturers and suppliers on part fabrication, quotes, and quality issues. • Review supplier feedback and incorporate it into designs to improve manufacturability. • Participate in and contribute to design reviews across the engineering organization. • Maintain a continuous improvement cycle between design → prototype → test → production. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline. • 3+ years of experience as a mechanical design engineer working on hardware products. • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or a comparable CAD platform. • Demonstrated experience designing enclosures, mounts, and mechanical assemblies for electronic devices. • Ability to produce 3D models, drawings, specifications, BOMs, and assembly documentation. • Strong understanding of materials, fasteners, tolerances, fits, and manufacturing processes. • Working knowledge of DFM/DFA principles and preparing designs for volume production. • Experience working with manufacturing teams, contract manufacturers, or suppliers. • Experience preparing complete production release packages for contract manufacturers for serial production, including: • Complete bill of materials (BOM) • Assembly drawings • Gerber files • Fabrication (FAB) notes • Testing requirements • Strong attention to detail and a systematic approach to engineering work. • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly growing environment. • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder). Preferred Qualifications • Experience with RF, embedded, telecommunications, field-deployed, or defense systems. • Experience with counter-UAS (C-UAS), electronic warfare (EW), unmanned systems, or other advanced defense technologies. • Knowledge of ingress protection (IP ratings), sealing, thermal management, and EMC/EMI design. • Familiarity with ruggedization and environmental test standards such as MIL-STD-810. • Hands-on experience with sheet metal, 3D printing, CNC machining, or laser cutting. • Technical leadership experience or experience leading design reviews. • Experience supporting an early-stage or rapidly scaling technology company. • Active U.S. security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one. Please include examples of your work with your application, such as 3D models, drawings, flat patterns, or other technical documentation (with any confidential or proprietary information removed).
